Mission
KFAI is a volunteer-based community radio station that exists to broadcast information, arts, and entertainment programming for an audience of diverse racial, social, and economic backgrounds. By providing a voice for people ignored or misrepresented by mainstream media, KFAI increases understanding between peoples and communities while fostering the values of democracy and social justice.

Founded in 1978, KFAI is a registered 501(c)(3) noncommercial educational (NCE) media organization whose financial support comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), local, state, and federal grants, underwriting and sponsorship, and through the generosity of listeners and members.
KFAI is a volunteer-powered community radio station committed to broadcasting information, arts, and entertainment for listeners of diverse racial, social, and economic backgrounds. Its mission is to amplify voices often misrepresented or ignored by mainstream media, fostering democracy, social justice, and cross-cultural understanding.
Located in the Cedar-Riverside/West Bank neighborhood, home to the largest Somali population in the U.S. and the state’s most culturally diverse region. KFAI plays a vital role in reflecting and connecting local voices. Beyond the airwaves, KFAI strengthens community ties through partnerships and events celebrating arts, music, and cultural heritage throughout the Twin Cities.
Languages spoken on-air include Amharic, Oromo, Somali, Tigrinya, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Shows such as Voices of Ethiopia, Avaz, and Filipino-American News represent immigrant perspectives. KFAI also airs Fresh Fruit, the nation’s longest-running LGBTQIA+ radio program. Public affairs programming includes Disability and Progress, Health Notes, Beats Rhymes and Democracy, No Name in the Street, spotlighting community-driven dialogue and diverse viewpoints
